The Legislature just passed HB 2523, naming a section of Highway 48 in Cameron County the “Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia Memorial Highway.” Deputy Garcia was killed in 2024 while responding to a crash, when his patrol car was hit by a drunk driver.

The bill doesn’t spend tax dollars. TxDOT will only put up the signs if private donations cover the cost. Law enforcement groups backed it, and it passed with unanimous support.
